Choosing the right Medo air pump

The model number is a useful guide to nominal airflow, but the correct pump depends on the airflow required at the working pressure of the system. Pipe length, water depth, diffusers and restrictions all create backpressure, so two installations using the same nominal pump size may not have the same operating conditions.

What to check before ordering

Existing pump model: Check the complete model number on the label, including any suffix.

Treatment plant details: Note the manufacturer and exact model of the sewage treatment plant or aeration system.

Required airflow and pressure: Compare performance at the system's working pressure, not only the free-air figure.

Outlet connection: Confirm the airline diameter and whether the existing hose and fittings can be reused.

Electrical and alarm connections: Check the supply and whether the installation uses a separate alarm or monitoring cable.

Medo linear-piston technology

Unlike a diaphragm air pump, a Medo pump uses an electromagnetically driven piston. This oil-free design is intended for continuous operation and has fewer routine wearing parts than a diaphragm mechanism. It does not remove the need to keep the air filter clean or to investigate excessive backpressure, overheating, unusual noise or reduced airflow.

Repair or replace?

A service kit may be appropriate when a compatible Medo pump has reduced output and the main body and electrical components remain sound. Replacement is usually the safer option when the pump is badly damaged, repeatedly failing, obsolete or incorrectly sized for the installation.

Greenleaf also stocks Medo repair kits and Medo replacement filters.

Need help identifying the correct pump?

Send us a clear photograph of the old pump label, the treatment plant make and model, details of any alarm cable and the outlet or airline size. We can then help narrow down the suitable Medo model without relying on litres per minute alone.

Collapsible content

What is a Medo air pump used for?

Medo air pumps supply oil-free compressed air for applications including sewage treatment plants, wastewater aeration, ponds, aquaculture and industrial equipment. The correct model depends on both the airflow requirement and the pressure it must work against.

Can I replace my existing air pump with a higher-output Medo model?

Not automatically. More airflow is not always better: an oversized pump may alter treatment performance, increase energy use or place unnecessary stress on the air system. Match the replacement to the treatment plant manufacturer's requirement or obtain installation-specific advice.

Are Medo pumps diaphragm pumps?

No. Medo LA pumps use linear-piston technology rather than a rubber-diaphragm mechanism. This affects how they operate and which service parts are suitable, so use parts listed for the exact Medo model.

Why is my Medo air pump getting hot or losing airflow?

A dirty inlet filter, restricted airline, blocked diffuser, excessive operating pressure or worn internal parts can reduce airflow and increase heat. Check the installation as well as the pump; replacing or repairing a pump without correcting a restriction can lead to another failure.

What replaced the Medo LAM-200?

The Medo LA-200F is the current direct replacement offered for the discontinued LAM-200. Confirm the installation details and connections before ordering, particularly where the original system has been modified.
